Blockchain in Trademark Transactions, Enforcement

Documenting Use in Commerce, Detecting Counterfeit Goods, Chain of Ownership and Assignments, and More

About the Course

Introduction

This CLE course will examine the many possible uses of blockchain for trademark management and transactions. The panel will discuss how brand owners can leverage blockchain in establishing, licensing, and enforcing trademark rights.

Description

Among the many issues that trademark and brand owners face is demonstrating use in commerce and battling counterfeits. Blockchain is a database that stores a ledger of assets and transactions and authenticates transactions. Blockchains complement trademarks well. For example, the trademark identifies a source while blockchain validates that source.

Blockchain has many useful purposes, including providing a time-stamped record of the creation of IP, registering and clearing trademark rights, using smart contracts to establish and enforce trademark licenses, detection of counterfeit or fake goods, and more.

Listen as our authoritative panel discusses the use of blockchain in the context of trademark transactions. The panel will also address tracking trademark licenses, detecting counterfeit goods, documenting trademark usage, and verifying certifications. The panel will offer guidance for leveraging blockchain to impact trademark transactions.
